Dr. James Briant
Research Software Engineer
James joined the OxRSE group in January 2026 having completed his PhD in Statistical Science at University College London. His research applied machine learning algorithms and uncertainty quantification methods to climate models to improve the representation of convective processes and precipitation. This work included the development of a JAX based python package for calibrating computer models, KOH-GPJax, and work on stochastically perturbing atmospheric variables at model runtime using Gaussian process models.
Now at Oxford, James is working on TarXiv, a centralised database of transients for the astrophysics community. He is also keen to support other academics in software engineering best practices to better support their work and the wider research community.
